Farmers denied canal water for one year

Post Source: Dawn Newspaper – 14 Jul, 2010

BAHAWALPUR, July 13: The farming community of Yazman tehsil staged a rally on Tuesday to protest irrigation department’s failure in releasing water in three distributaries touching boundaries of Cholistan desert. The rally by the Kissan Board Pakistan was taken out in the dried-up bed of a canal near Qaziwala village, about 50km from here.

It was largely attended by farmers who travelled a considerable distance in reaching the protest venue to vent their anger against local irrigation officials who had failed to honour their commitment of June 30 regarding the release of water in Derawar Wah, Dahri and Salari canals.

KBP leaders said the locals and their animals had been facing difficulties even in getting potable water for the last one year. They announced that their struggle would continue to get their right.

It may be recalled that canal officials had, on June 30, assured a rally of farmers to release water in the canals.

ENTRY TEST: Three examination centres have been set up for the first time in the city for the July 20 entrance test of 1,244 candidates of Bahawalpur division seeking admission to medical colleges.

This was stated during a meeting held under the chairmanship of divisional commissioner Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmad here on Tuesday.

The centres will be Baghdadul Jadid campus of the Islamia University IUB), Sadiq Egerton (SE) College and Sadiq Dane (SD) High School, Farid Gate.

The meeting was informed that roll number slips had been issued to the candidates.—Correspondent
