NA body for trickling down policy benefits to small farmers

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Food and Agriculture on Wednesday urged the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) to make its policies more beneficial for the small growers and take effective measures to ensure the benefits of its policies at grassroots level and give them more incentives in order to overcome their financial problems.The committee met here under the chairmanship of MNA Javed Iqbal Warraich and discussed the performance of the MINFAL and its attached departments. It expressed its dissatisfaction over the insufficient efforts made by the ministry to make its policies more beneficial for the small growers.The committee also recommended that the ministry might intervene timely regarding fixation of prices of different crops to stop the monopoly of middleman and also adopt scientific procedure for evaluation of production of the crops.

The government may avoid imposing ban on inter-provincial movement of wheat in order to overcome its shortage in different parts of the country, the committee recommended. Earlier, Additional Secretary Ministry of Food and Agriculture Shahid Hussain Raja briefly apprised the committee about the performance of the ministry and its attached departments.

Besides, Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Muhammad Gondal, MNAs Nadeem Afzal, Syed Javed Hassnain, Abdul Majeed Khan Khanan Khail, Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman, Muhammad Arshad Khan Laghari , Rana Tanveer Hussain, Jam Mir Muhammad Yousaf, Dr Abdul Kadir Khanzada and Syed Haider Ali Shah attended the meeting.
